The Power of Mentoring to Make a Positive Difference!

At Positive About Inclusion, both Karen and I are massive advocates of mentoring and the power of conversations to inspire, share experience and provide support. Sometimes a single conversation with someone who has a different perspective, a different experience, or has walked a similar path before can have such a positive impact. It can open eyes to opportunities not previously considered, build confidence when self-doubt creeps in, or simply provide reassurance about not being alone.

Some people assume mentoring is simply about receiving advice from someone more experienced but in reality, effective mentoring is much more than that and the best mentors do not provide all the answers. Instead, they ask questions, encourage reflection, and help individuals discover their own solutions.

Providing mentoring opportunities for colleagues or seeking out mentoring opportunities as an individual matters more today than ever before, our workplaces are changing rapidly, careers are rarely linear, leaders face increasing complexity, and entrepreneurs are often navigating unfamiliar territory. Access to a mentor can provide invaluable support and dedicated time to think, reflect and grow.

While the personal impact of mentoring is often reflected in individual success stories, there is also strong evidence demonstrating its wider value…

  • Research shows that 76% of professionals believe mentoring is important to their development, yet many people still do not have access to a mentor
  • The impact on career progression can be significant. Studies have found that employees with mentors are promoted more frequently than those without them, with some research suggesting mentees are promoted five times more often
  • The perceived value of mentoring is equally striking, with 96% of mentees reporting that mentoring is useful and beneficial to their development
  • Perhaps unsurprisingly, many of the world’s most successful organisations have embraced mentoring as a key part of their talent development strategies. Research indicates that the vast majority of Fortune 500 companies operate mentoring programmes

Mentoring has become an important part of who we are as a business. As a values-driven organisation, we see mentoring as one of the most meaningful ways we can contribute to the wider community while helping individuals realise their potential. Both Karen and I are qualified coaches and mentors, and we regularly volunteer our time to mentor others giving our time to mentoring initiatives including the One Hour Project, The Girls Network and WISH. Our motivation is simple – we understand the value of mentoring because we have experienced it ourselves. As we built our careers and navigated our own business journey, we have benefited enormously from the support of exceptional mentors. Their guidance helped us make better decisions, avoid unnecessary mistakes, approach challenges with greater confidence and helped us see possibilities we may have otherwise overlooked.

At Positive About Inclusion, we believe mentoring is one of the most practical and powerful ways to create positive change. Whether supporting an emerging leader, someone navigating a career transition, or an entrepreneur launching their first business, meaningful conversations can unlock confidence, capability and opportunity. That’s why we continue to invest our time in mentoring, and why we believe everyone deserves access to a great mentor.

We are incredibly grateful to the people who have mentored us throughout our journey, and we are proud to continue supporting others through ours. Because sometimes one conversation really can change everything.
