At a Glance

Positive About Inclusion was commissioned by Pickering and Ferens Homes (PFH) to deliver a bespoke, two hour, EDI workshop for members of their Resident Committee. In addition, we were asked to have a structured discussion with members of the Executive Team about their current approach to EDI.

The brief for the Resident Committee workshop was to focus in particular on appropriate language and behaviours alongside the critical role diversity considerations play in the context of community engagement.

About the Client

Pickering and Ferens Homes (PFH) is a Registered Social Housing Provider, a registered charity and a member of the National Almshouse Association. They own and manage nearly 1400 properties, located within Kingston-Upon-Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. Their origins lay with the philanthropic activities of 2 prominent Hull businessmen – Christopher Pickering and Thomas Ferens. PFH provide accommodation and services predominantly for residents aged over 60 years old with a particular social value emphasis on health and wellbeing in later life.

Challenges and Objectives

The training was required to be informative and engaging and to be delivered in person at the PFH offices in Hull. The desire was to provide all participants with a greater understanding of the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion and to align the training to PFH’s values. Furthermore, PFH had requested that a particular focus be made to appropriate language and behaviours in the ever evolving world in which we live.

Solution

In the workshop participants refreshed their knowledge about EDI and why it matters, exploring the role we all can play in really embedding EDI through the language we use and the behaviours we adopt. To embed the learning a game of ‘Language Traffic Lights’ was played and having created a safe space for open discussion we maximised the learning opportunity gained through the sharing of first hand lived experience. The workshop then covered the appreciation of difference and participants considered how they value difference and how they will create an inclusive atmosphere in their meetings.
