“Thank you for your session today. It really made me think about how we can communicate better and how emails can, so easily, be misunderstood. I'm going to email less and pick up the phone more!” Workshop Participant, Age UK Sunderland

Having delivered a successful team building workshop for Age UK Sunderland’s Essence Team earlier in the year, Positive About Inclusion was delighted to be commissioned to facilitate another team building event for two of their other teams. The brief was to design and deliver an engaging and interactive workshop to bring the teams together, to get to know each other better and to explore how the teams can work together for improved outcomes.

About the Client

Age UK Sunderland is a strong, local and independent charity run by and for the people of Sunderland. They support older people throughout the City through the provision of quality services and by campaigning on issues that affect them. Age UK Sunderland aims to promote the well-being of all older people throughout the City of Sunderland, improve their quality of life and help them maintain independence.

Challenges and Objectives

The two teams participating in the workshop were teams that shared some elements of work. It was recognised that communication between the teams could be improved to result in better outcomes and as such we were asked to deliver a session that would be enjoyable and fun, getting everyone engaged and fully participating.

Solution

We chose to use a ‘Great British Bake Off’ theme for the afternoon’s event, engaging participants in a range of fun activities:

  • ‘Store Cupboard Ingredients’ – an activity to get to know each other better and to understand that whilst we are all unique, there is more that unites us than divides us

  • ‘Signature Bake’ – a creative activity about shared purpose, working together and the value which everyone brings to the team dynamic

  • ‘Technical Challenge’ – an exercise focusing on effective communication

  • ‘Show Stoppers’ – an activity to explore the ‘recipe’ for successfully working together

In the final activity the group were divided into pairs and asked to create their ‘Show Stoppers’ using a range of cakes and decorative ingredients. This proved to be a very popular activity!

Impact

The workshop was really positive, everyone engaged from the outset, and they really enjoyed learning more about each other through the various activities.

It was great for us to be asked once again by Age UK Sunderland to support them with a team development activity, clearly demonstrating that the previous work we have completed has been well received!
